Described as a ‘Smash hit’ by a leading primary MfL consultant, Zim Zam Zoum is an innovative programme for teaching French to children aged 6 to 12. The scheme, presented in the format of 24 comprehensive, colourful and engaging Activprimary/Activstudio flipcharts, has the unique feature of using animated song as the focus of the course.
The seven themed songs are presented as witty, high-quality animations, featuring delightful, recurring characters, to engage pupils and motivate their learning. The vocabulary and dialogues of the songs are developed and consolidated by a progression of imaginative, interactive exercises, which make full use of all the Promethean tools and actions.
Animated explanations of simple grammar, together with 35 printable activity sheets support the songs and exercises, whilst flashcards, vocabulary sheets and songwords can be printed out.
Module 1 is the first of 4 modules which will cover the new Key Stage 2 Scheme of Work and the Framework for Languages. Topics taught in Module 1 include: asking and saying your name, age, where you live and your favourite colours; numbers, days of the week, weather, nouns of the natural world, classroom items, ice-creams, describing pets, the map of France and much more besides.
Exploiting rhyme, rhythm, repetition and melody the songs are easily memorable and invitingly singable ! One teacher using ZZZ describes the effect of the songs on her pupils:
‘Bodies started swaying, toes were tapping, fingers snapping. One boy got up out of his chair and danced around the room. Boys and girls alike sing all the verses. They quickly acquire new vocabulary and expressions.’
The songs, incorporating as much useful dialogue as possible, act as a springboard to role-play and are sung by native French children. There are separate karaoke tracks and pupils can even record themselves and compare!
International Suitability
Zim Zam Zoum has been designed to meet the English KS2 framework. However it is suitable for teaching French to English speaking students aged 6-12 years and can be adapted to most language curriculum.
