Promethean Planet celebrated the launch of Fairtrade Fortnight with a range of educational resources designed for teachers to use in the classroom to discuss the topic of Fairtrade amongst developing countries.
The Fairtrade mark is an independent consumer label which appears on a diverse range of products, from coffee to flowers, as an independent guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal.
For a product to display the Fairtrade mark it must meet international Fairtrade standards, which are set by the international certification body 'Fairtrade Labelling Organisations International (FLO).'
The Planet team are grateful for access to a range of Fairtrade images, which have been turned into a resource pack. As well as the resource pack, you can also download special Fairtrade flipcharts from the 'resource' tab.
Discussing Fairtrade and the issue of developing countries is an extremely topical citizenship subject for many teachers across the globe. It can also cover other subject topics such as geography & environmental studies.
The Planet team have produced three flipcharts to help you teach the principles of Fairtrade in the classroom; one for Primary pupils, one for Secondary pupils and a general flipchart introducing some Fairtrade farmers.
In coordination with Fairtrade, the Planet team have also produced a unique resource pack with a selection of images for you to use in the classroom with your Activboard. Please note that these images are copyright of the Fairtrade Foundation and the photographer, Simon Rawles, and may only be used in an educational, non-commercial capacity.
Producer organisations that supply Fairtrade products are inspected and certified by the FLO. The farmers then receive a minimum price that covers the cost of sustainable production and an extra premium that is invested towards social or economic development projects.
