Promethean have partnered with telecommunications company BT's Better World Campaign to assist in producing its first teaching resource designed exclusively for whiteboard use, titled ‘Molly on Board.’
‘Molly and the Pirate’, originally a comic book, has now been expanded into a series of flipcharts titled Molly on Board. The comic has been divided into seven chapters, each accompanied by an activity flipchart incorporating voting and other exercises.
Each flipchart’s menu includes teacher notes detailing how to use the materials, suggested links to the curriculum, and pictures from the story in a Word document enabling teachers and students to create their own comics or work materials.
BT provides a range of educational resources that promote better communication skills for children, their parents and teachers. All are available for free from BT's website www.bt.com/betterworld as part of BT's Better World Campaign, an initiative launched in 2006, aiming to make every young voice heard and provide the tools and platforms with which to use them.
Commenting on the first time that BT have adapted their resources for flipchart format, Dave Hancock, Head of Education and Volunteering at BT, said: "Whiteboards provide an amazing way for teachers to stimulate class discussion and group activities. Working with Promethean has encouraged us to look at how the new digital technologies in the classroom can promote more speaking and listening activities."
The story of Molly and the Pirate was created and illustrated by John Rowley. Pictures made especially for this resource can be found in the 'For Teachers' section on the Molly on Board menu, should you wish to use them for paper materials.
All the flipcharts are unpublished so teachers can re-save and change them to make their own flipcharts. In the 'For Teachers' site there are ideas on how to use the materials in different ways contributed by teachers. Any teacher can send their own ideas on different ways of using the content to dialogic@dialogics.com
Alternatively, if you are an Activstudio or Activprimary user, pictures of Molly can be downloaded from the resource pack section of Promethean Planet and loaded directly into your Resource bank; creating your own teaching materials and stories.
The Molly and the Pirate flipchart is ideal for mainstream school Years 5 & 6, but will also engage Year 7 students. Advisory teachers have linked the contents to the Numeracy and Literacy strategy and notes on this with information on how the content could be used for listening, speaking, reading and writing activities, are included in the ‘For Teachers’ tab of the menu.
