The RSPCA is the oldest and best-known animal welfare organisation in the world.
It works hard to improve the lives of millions of animals each year including pets, farm animals, wildlife and animals used in research.
Because the RSPCA is a charity that receives no government funding, it depends entirely on donations from the public. The RSPCA would not exist without the support of its volunteers who provide an invaluable service to animals across England and Wales.
The RSPCA has more than 170 branches throughout England and Wales that carry out local animal welfare, with the help of volunteers.
All of the branches are self-funded and need to fundraise in order to survive.
The RSPCA's education department works with teachers to develop informed, responsible and active citizens in the following ways:
RSPCA Week is a national event each year, supported by Tesco, to raise money for branches and promote the work of the RSPCA.
Throughout the week, volunteers from RSPCA branches collect donations of pet food and cash in Tesco stores, for their work with animals.
The 15th RSPCA Week took place in April 2009 and branches raised £302,525, their highest-ever total!
The next RSPCA Week will take place from 26th April to 2nd May 2010 and details will be on the website nearer the time.
Here's a list of things you can do to help the RSPCA continue its vital animal welfare work:
Today, nearly half of UK families own a pet. That’s more than nine million cats, six-and-a-half million dogs, one million budgerigars and 18 million goldfish!
The RSPCA promotes responsible pet ownership and educates people about the Animal Welfare Act 2006, which places a ‘duty of care’ on anyone responsible for a pet to make sure the animal’s needs are met.
The RSPCA and Promethean have developed a series of three flipcharts for Key Stage 1 and 2 children to introduce the idea that animals have needs, just like humans, and not all animals make suitable pets. The flipcharts feature some familiar characters from the RSPCA’s interactive resource.
To extend the learning from the flipcharts, why not try the ‘Meeting their needs’ Flash quiz?
There's also a resource pack, with a selection of images of pets for you to use in the classroom with your Activboard (available within the Resources tab).
