Default Color and Learning

Hi Everyone,

I am looking for teachers who might be interested in a research project that explores the use of colored bakgrounds and learning to read. Also, if any of you have any resources in this area it would be most helpful!

Yours,
Kathy Tan, New England TLC, Promethean

You may want to try the following website.

Hope this helps!

Hi Kathleen,

What sort of age group were you looking at? I teach 4-6 year olds and have a personal interest in this as I have to wear tinted glasses in order to read etc. I often use a cream / pale yellow background in my flipcharts as I find it easier to look at.

You have probably seen these websites but just in case you haven't - it may help:

Kathleen -

I teach a class who are generally below grade level in most subjects. Reading is the weakest area, and of course, effects all others. I teach fourth grade - but would love to integrate anything into my classroom. I'll try anything to help boost these struggling readers!!! I already use a lot of color, including backgraounds, but have not correlated it to see if it improved reading.

With help form my other TLA colleagues in the UK, I've created a flipchart on using IWBs with visually impaired people and it's in the Resource area under Special Needs. Here's the link: http://www.Prometheanworld.com/uk/sc...index.html&d=1 I'd be interested in any comments you have on it. My email is david.bunting@Prometheanworld.com

David,

This is a fabulous resource that prompts teachers to consider color, font style, font size and adapting instruction for students with visual challenges. Thank you for sharing it!

Hi Lou,

I am actually looking for someone who might be interested in doing research with their own class to determine if any of the color filters would be optimal for all students. Or if there are several of the most common color combinations using the Irlen method?

Have you evaluated your own students or become trained in the Irlen method diagnostics?

Thanks for the web pages...many people have not heard of Irlen...
