View Full Version : Using the blind tool for number bond exploration

I have created a really simple flipchart to allow exploration of pairs of numbers that total 10. It's based on the flip flap books idea where you fold over some of the grid (ie. hide them) and then ask the children to say how many they can see and how many are hidden. I have created the grid with 10 objects on it and the blind tool can then be used to reveal some of the objects and the children can guess/state or calculate the number of objects behind the blind - that number can then be revealed. All number bonds for the number 10 can be created and explored by using the blind tool in different directions. On page 2 of the flipchart I have used the same idea but with a translucent rectangle so that the hidden objects can be seen but are covered up (by changing the size and shape of the rectangle in Desgin Mode) to distinguish from the 'seen' objects. Bit difficult to explain so have a look at it - if I remember to attach it!! The grid is locked but the objects are not to allow you to customize to fit topics etc. (we're doing Snow White - poisoned apples!).

A lovely idea, Sarah. You don't actually need to be in Design mode to get the handles in AP2 - there's an option in Settings - Flipchart Options to Show pickup handles in present mode. Obviosuly this might be more confusing for younger children to cope with on a regular basis so you might not want it on all the time, but my Y5s dont' have any problems.

On a different note, your CCVCC flipchart in the Resources - can you move the letters in presentation mode? Because of the linked sound files I can only click on them and get the sound - I had to then go into design mode to move them (and of course then couldnt' hear the sound - I hasten to say that I personally didn't need to hear the sound, the end of term hasn't addled my brain to that extent!)

Hi Lara

That problem with the cvc/ccvcc flipchart has confused me. It was created using AP1 and we are using it regularly in AP1. It did not have sound files linked to it - but as you correctly say when it's opened in AP2 the sound files appear. We never intended it to have sound files attached!

Got me on that one!!

Well, hi people!

I don't know how gremlin sounds can be attached to an image

However, I do know that I was concerned that moving an image with a sound was going to be confusing.

In AP1 if you added a sound to an image you could still move it, whereas in AP2 when an image has a sound attached to it as soon as you go and move it, the sound plays.

The only way to sort this...

You need to choose the option in settings (Prom man, ..., settings, flipchart objects) that says show pick up handles in present mode.

Now if you want to move a sound embedded image you drag your cursor across the object and you get a little box with a cross in it on the top of the image. This is your pick up handle!

Hope that makes sense!

In Billy Goats Gruff flipchart

Shared flipcharts>Primary>Literacy>Stories

To move the Billy Goats Gruff across the bridge and to "hear" the "trip trap trip trapping" across the bridge you click on the goat having first got your pick up handle ready and then as the trip trapping sounds you "walk him across the bridge.

Sorry for slight confusion.

I have just written all of the above without looking anything up to check.

If it is all correct I would be amazed, but actually I am sure this probably reflects something else :D

Well it made sense to me - but then say no more!!

Hi - I've got to the bottom of that sound file attachment problem. [clap] We used an alphabet 'borrowed' from downloaded resource 'Rainbow alphabet' - when we used this flipchart we didn't realise it had sound files attached as we didn't look for them as we weren't using it in that way - ie. we just dragged the correct letters to the correct places after the children had told us the letter sound they were looking for. On investigation in AP1 I have found that each letter has a sound file attached to it!! - Obvious really :o) - it's just that it only becomes immediately obvious in AP2 when you move the pointer near to the letter. I shall be removing the sound files from the flipchart - is there a quick way of doing this or will I have to remove each one separately? (Well I was wondering what I could do in my Easter holidays!) If anybody wants me to add the 'new no sound files attached flipchart' to Resources please let me know.

Here it is with the sound files removed. It only took 5 minutes - honest - because I discovered that ... if you go into Design Mode and select all the letters as a job lot, so to speak, you can assign or unassign attributes all in one go. Go into the Object Properties, select Do Nothing from the Actions and it removes any sound files (or other attributes) currently applied to the selected objects. And ... if you leave the Object properties dialogue box on the screen, then go to the next page, you don't have to call it up again!

Oh, I added one or two sound files - but to the pictures.+wave+
