We have made available a standalone installer which contains ActivInspire only, for those of you who want to run ActivInspire on distributions other than Ubuntu (if you are using Ubuntu, it is better to use our software repository, as explained on the download page on Promethean Planet).

There are 3 .tar.gz file:

http://www.activsoftware.co.uk/linux/activinspire.tar.gz (~ 262 MB)
This contains Inspire + Handwriting recognition + Resources (backgrounds, grids, etc...)

http://www.activsoftware.co.uk/linux/activinspire_no_hwr.tar.gz (~136 MB)
This contains Inspire + Resources (backgrounds, grids, etc...)

http://www.activsoftware.co.uk/linux/activinspire_only.tar.gz (~55 MB)
This contains Inspire only with English handwriting recognition only and no resources. I recommend using this one if you have a netbook with limited disk space. It installs to about 132 MB on the OS partition ( the one containing / ) (some netbooks only reserve limited space on the OS partition and keep all the remaining space for /home )

There is an MD5SUMS file too to double check the integrity of your download:
http://www.activsoftware.co.uk/linux/MD5SUMS

Follow the installation instructions here:
http://www.Prometheanplanet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8394

I have tried this method on the following distributions:
Mandriva 2009, Fedora 10, Debian 5, openSuse 11.x, Ubuntu 8.xx 64-bit (with ia32-libs installed)

This does not work on ASUS eeepc running Xandros.

I recommend you turn off 3D effects on your desktop (Compiz, Metisse, etc...) as it slows down annotations in Inspire.

Hi Pierre,
having a bit of a 'duh' moment - when I try to download the Ubuntu 8.04 Activinspire from the repository, and I consistently get 'error 403, Forbidden, You don't have permission to access /linux/repos/ubuntu/ on this server.'
This has happened when I attempt to download Professional ed, Personal Ed, 10 day 'give us a go' ed, even the Ubuntu 7 and 8.10 fails for me.
I am trying to access this via a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.04, some of the updates are on, but not all, and I'm behind a BT firewall.
I also couldn't access this through Windows, which is why the fresh install now exists.
I have just downloaded via 'other distros' thread, and will install this later, unless you have any bright ideas.

Please help, Obi Wan, you're our only hope!
many thanks,
Jim

Are you trying to download via the URL, or are you using Synaptic (Ubuntu's Package manager) to install Inspire ?

The web server will not let you download Inspire manually, you must use a package manager (have a look at the videos on the Linux download link on Planet (I cannot remember the exact location) ).

This is a useful link about software installation on Ubuntu

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/installingsoftware

(I am not sure how much experience you have with Linux software installation, so forgive me if you already know this :) )

I attached the video instructions for Ubuntu 8.04 as a reminder.

It is a zip file containing an ogv file, it should be watchable on any Linux machine.
(If you are unfortunate to have to watch it on a Windows computer, you can find ogv codecs there
http://www.xiph.org/dshow/ )

Many Thanks Pierre - or Obi Wan![clap]
as a 'coming across from windows' user, I expected to see a file similar to '.msi' windows installer package. Yet Another ms pinching of a word / name. the proper installer is as you describe, not a 'download an installer package file, and run it'.
I really hope this helps other users too, or maybe I am the only errant user!

Anyway, it is currently installing <again!> so I am expecting this time it will work correctly.

BTW, I found a windows ogv file viewer through a search, and it is open source! it is saved on the pc, so I haven't access to it, but will post the link when I'm back in 'la la land'!

Thanks again
Jim

As a coming from Windows user [clap], installing software on Linux can seem confusing, as it is a totally different model. No more

search
download
double click
agree to eula
agree to location
install
optional: uninstall spyware

Instead
Start package manager
search
install

Hoping you will no go back to Windows soon and give Linux a good chance :),
regards,
