Thanks to everyone who is providing Linux feedback. I just wanted to clarify our position on which distributionswe currently support. Promethean provides full telephone and email support for ActivInspire in Linux Ubuntu 7.10, 8.04 and 8.10.

We are currently running ActivInspire on various distributions but these are unsupported. However, you are welcome to use the Personal Edition of ActivInspire via the download link belowto try out on other distributions. If you require further information or would like to talk to us about plans for future distributions, please PM me.

download link
Self contained installer for Linux ActivInspire only (no drivers)
http://www.activsoftware.co.uk/linux/activinspire.tar.gz

Download instructions
1/ download the tar.gz file
2/ Open a terminal
3/ untar it by typing the following :
tar xvpf activinspire.tar.gz
This will create an inspire directory.
5/ Type cd inspire to change directory
4/ As root or with sudo, install by running the install bash script:
with su: su –c "./install.sh"
with sudo: sudo ./install.sh

This will install Inspire only. If running GNOME, your main menu should contain an Education section, with ActivInspire. You can always run the command from anywhere (prompt, run window, etc...) by typing inspire.

NB: this is a 32-bit version of Inspire. We have done very limited testing on 64-bit. It will run on Ubuntu using the ia32-libs package.

Thanks.

This release will not work on an eeepc running the stock Xandros. It is because some components of Xandros are slightly out of date on the eeepc (even after the updates). I have passed on a request to our build team to build a version specifically for the eeepc. Of course, you can always install another distribution on your eeepc, I quite like Mandriva 2009 myself, it works a treat on the 901 :-)

As for 64-bit, like Mary said, the version included in the .tar.gz should run, if you install the 32-bit support packages. On Ubuntu 64-bit, the package is called ia32-libs. We haven't released a 64-bit version of the driver yet, or a native 64-bit Inspire.
