Ages ago, Margaret mentioned using two images of the same place - old and new - place on top of each other and using the translucency setting to 'fade in' the new photo on top of the old photo so children could see the changes.

I used this idea with black and white and coloured images. I frequently ask the children to look at a black and white picture and imagine the colours, sounds, what will happen when the image is 'unpaused'. i decided it would be interesting to actually be able to 'turn up' the colour on the image.

Attached is an example. In Design Mode (Click on Promethean Man then click on his Friend) you can use the Select tool to click on the image. Click on the Object Properties icon (the last one) on the object toolbar and then use the Translucency slider to fade int he colour.

The way I manipluate the images is to copy and paste the picture I want to use into word twice. On one image I use the Picture toolbar and choose the Image Control icon (2nd one in my version) to make the picture Greyscale. I also play around with the Contrast and Brightness settings on the tool bar.

I then copy and paste both images into my flipchart with the black and white one behind the colour one. You then use the translucency slider on the colour image to fade it our completely.

Hope that's vaguely clear - my advice is to just have a play with it if it's something that appeals to you - my Y5s thought it was magic!

That's a nice idea Lara.

The technique also transfers well to mapping activities - example of an aerial photo covering a road map attached. Either fade the photo or rub and reveal.
