I'm having a very hard time using the slate. Is there a trick to it? I gave it to my students to use and they found it hard to use too. Help!!!!!!!!!

Here are some things to consider:

First of all- don't look at it. Some folks try to look at the Activslate when they write. Look at the Activboard! I have to remember that the Activslate is like my old mouse pad. I didn't look it it, I looked at my computer monitor.
Second of all, an Activslate is unlike a mouse in that if your pen is on the top left of the slate your cursor will be at the top left of the Activboard. With a mouse you stay in the middle and stroke your way across the computer screen. (I'm sure there is a technical term for this.)
Thirdly, I find that if I want to double click, I can place my wrist against the Activslate and can use the Activpen more precisely.
Finally, I prefer to "write" large amounts of text on the Activboard, but find that clicking and simple dragging and drawing is fine with the Activslate. ...And I don't walk well with it. I prefer to place it flat on a desk. (However, I have seen others who are much more adept at walking and writing than I am. They seem to have NO problems doing this.)

To help my students "get the feel" of the slate, I allow them to just write on the board using the slate, move objects around, and play for a few minutes. It's seems to help make them feel more comfortable. bren

Usually people adapt to it in a few moments. A few minutes practice should be all it takes. Treat it like paper - rest your wrist on the surface to help double click and when writing - and keep the pen near the surface to make the pen track the mouse pointer.

If you feel it is malfunctioning in some way - and 'no-one' can operate it - I might just check with support.

I like to prowl around with the Slate - the trick is to hold it VERY firmly against your body so it is stable. I kind of cuddle it in my left arm (I am severely right-handed) with my fingers curled up over the edge of the Slate.
Yes, do keep the pen close to the surface.
