Below is an interesting snippet from an email discussion list about using the TI SmartView program on a Smartboard. I haven't experienced any similar problems on my ActivBoard - what about others?

> I and my fellow department members have also experienced the lag time issue with SmartView on my Smartboard. The effect this has on our teaching depends on
> A. the application you're demonstrating;
> B. your level of experience with SmartView.
>
> For example, I have relatively little trouble when using SmartView for AP Stats applications, as the lag time becomes an issue when scrolling through lists of options or lists of data. Before I got accustomed to this I would frequently overshoot the target, but I learned to scroll more slowly or just use the shortcut.
>
> However, the lag time becomes much more of a problem for a colleague who uses Cabri Jr in her geometry classes. The slow responsiveness of the arrow keys has forced her to abandon SmartView completely in favor of an overhead calculator.
>
> So it appears to me that for most AP Stat uses the lag time is acceptable and gets more so with experience, but that it becomes more of a problem with other APPs.

Hi Rex --

I saw the same discussion, and thought the whole thing was odd, as I've never experienced this problem on an Activboard. I wonder what it is about a Smartboard that would cause this problem?:confused::confused:

Rex - Thanks for sharing.

That is interesting. I have the TI software loaded on my computer and it works just fine with the Activboard. So I'm not sure why they are having these issues on the SMARTboard, but the good news is that you shouldn't have the problems on the Activboard! :)

Hi,

I use Smartview for a variety of secondary math classes such as Algebra 2 which includes Stats and Geom applications. I have never had a problem like what you have suggested. However, I was using a MAC with Tiger software. TI has not updated the Smartview software to use Leopard yet. Perhaps it is a PC problem and not an Activboard problem?

Mgwaltney - I'm happy to hear that you couldn't run TI on Leopard either.

I tried to install the TI software on my new Mac running Leopard and it wouldn't work. I think that TI hasn't released a Leopard friendly version yet.

The lag time that Rex mentioned was on a SMART board, not a Promethean board.

Promethean technology is digital and SMART is analog. We once had a demonstration (by Lisa D??) where we had the boards side by side and just made swooping circles on both boards. The SMART board couldn't keep up while the Promethean board was right on the money. I suspect that this capacity or lack of such is what is causing the problem with TI Smartview on the SMART board.

I just spoke with TI and the Leopard update is available on October 15th. You will need to call TI support with your product Key and they will mail the new version to you for free.[clap][clap]
