Well, how do I start! Some of you regulars had seen that my signature has changed schools, or rather I have. Upon moving schools, I had to set up a class website and I went from teaching on the 90 minute block to 55 minute periods. I do love my new school. With those short periods, I have started posting the days flipcharts for the students to download. WOW!!:p Have they taken advantage of this. They view them at home to recap and study for quizzes and tests. I am just amazed at the amount of hits that page gets and the chatter among the students when other are absent and say " well did you download and view it, she had all the notes online" If you have been weary to give post the link to the viewer and then your flipcharts, do it. The interaction and the rhetoric among the students is worth the experience. :p:p:p

I really want to get students using the viewer, but I think there is a side issue, which I have contacted support about. I don't think I would recommend encouraging younger students to start entering their details on websites, and this is what the Promethean download page asks them to do before they can download it.
I would much prefer to be able to distribute the viewer to them through the school, but there is no provision for this. (btw- I don't wish to distribute the student edition to them, just the viewer)

Hi Dennis,
I think this is an opportunity for students to "share at home". I really do think that downloading the viewer could be an excellent way of students sharing with their parents/carers what they are doing in school. So them having to enter their details can therefore be a shared experience. Why not write to all parents and suggest that they download it on their children's behalf? +wave+

I think Dennis raises an excellent point. What is the purpose of forcing students to download the viewer from the web, as opposed to allowing schools to freely distribute it to their students? It's not clear to me why we can't do that.
I also can't imagine that parents are going to be thrilled about this.

Just curious, why don't you want to distribute the student edition to them. I am currently thinking about putting the student edition on all of our student computers. I feel that this will be a great way for students to respond to literature or to show their knowledge in other subjects. Before i do this, i want to make sure that i am not missing anything.

I feel that as we approach the 21st century learninr, we need to offer oppertunities for students to be able to interact with the technology. I fell that as I have given them access to the viewer on line, and not requiring them to do so, I have allowed the students to start to explore the software and giving them the chance to create. As I share with my kids the lessons that I prepare for them and the projects that I expect them to present in class, I can see the students begin to create thie own flipchart for presenting material themself. I encourage this. :)
Yes it would be great for schools to distribute the software, but as my relationship with Promethean has grown, I have found the company to be quite true to its word as far as privacy goes.

Thanks for the idea, but it wouldn't work as well as I would want. I work in a language school and, believe it or not, many parents who send their children to learn English don't themselves speak English. This in itself will discourage them from downloading the viewer.
Also, I am principally interested in the ActivPrimary flipchart viewer, as we use AP most of all in the school. To give them the AS student edition might add a bit of confusion to the matter. If there was an AP student edition, then that would be a differnt matter...
thanks for your replies :)

I second your points, Dennis. As I've posted elsewhere recently, I, too am an advocate of as much functionality as possible being made easily available to students (particularly with ACTIVprimary). I have a seven year old daughter who has no problems at all in making good use of many V3 features and loves to make flipcharts with containers. She is lucky to have access to the full software only because her father is a teacher. There are so many learning opportunities yet to be exploited through this fantastic software. An AP Student edition would be a welcome step in the right direction (and available in alternatives to downloading).

Doug, and friends, I agree although my students would not use AP, I love the idea that it could be available ind a student addition. Last year, my 7 year old turned his report on China into a flipchart instead of a paper and poster report. It was a typical report such as " The name of my country is______, The capitol of my country is____, and so on. His teacher had just gotten and activboard, and this is the flipchart that he produced, what a little help from mom. It is great to see them using the technology creatively:p!!!

Hi, wilcogirl.
It is a great idea. But how do you inform your class where to download the filpchart that you had uploaded? Did you give them the web address through email?

Well, I have a class website, and I use My teacher pages. I was able to set up a link called flipcharts from class. It has worked out very well.:)

Hi all,
I was a little leary of it at first, because I did not know how well it would go over, but I decided this year to post on my 4th grade class website links to my flipcharts. I also posted a link to the student edition available through download. (I decided on the student version as opposed to the viewer because I wanted the students to be able to interact with the flps at home.)
The response from the kids has been nothing but positive! They love using the flps at home and really almost jump out of their skin when they talk to me about it. I am so glad that I chose to go a little out of my comfort zone and give the students the opportunity to have the software at home.

Laura, that is so cool. It has been awesome in my class, Now when I forget to post the notes, the kids come to me and tell me, especially when they are out.
