Hi everyone, :)
Who doesn't like listening to music? Music can add fun to any lesson but it can also be an excellent learning opportunity (pronunciation, vocabulary...). I teach English as a second language to Brazilian learners and I've been designing special flipcharts with songs to help my learners improve their English. In fact, what I do is the following:

1- First, I download a song or a video clip.
2- Then, I search for the lyrics and copy and paste them on my flipchart.
3- By clicking twice on the lyrics or on a sentence or object, I get to the PROPERTIES icon.
4- CLICK ON ACTION
5- to embed a song, I choose PLAY SONG
6- to embed a video, I choose OPEN EMBEDDED DOCUMENT OR FILE.

That's it! Hope I could help you all! Any doubt, let me know. +wave+

PS: I'll try to submit a flipchart of a song I prepared soon.

I was wondering if we could have a special section for songs... What do you all think about it? Is it possible?????

Hello

Can anyone help? I am working on a flipchart where pupils choose keywords and drag them to a shape. What I would like to happen is that the incorrect words are returned to the list but I want a sound to happen at the same time.

How could I do this?

Many thanks

Nick

Do you mean the sound will be attached to the Incorrect Words or the Correct Word that stays in the box?

I think so. What I want to happen is for pupils to drag a keyword into a shape and if the keyword is incorrect then for it to get snapped back into position using the return if not contained principle.

But when this happens I would like a noise to happen. So the noise has got to happen when the item is being automatically snapped back into position.

I hope this helps. Thanks

Hi everyone!
One of the songs I prepared for my students is now available in Recent Flipcharts (SONG: Close to you). Please, download it and let me know your opinion of it. Anyway, I would like to encourage you to do the same! Prepare flipcharts with songs! Soon, I will submit other songs...
thanks

Karla,
I'm a bit concerned about this. Somebody has the copyright to the songs you have downloaded and embedded. Are they copyright free or have you cleared the song as far as copyright is concerned?

Well Peter,
:confused:I'm not sure I understood your concern... I guess it's alright since we can download all kinds of songs from the net. Besides, I'm not gaining any profit by doing it...
Anyway, I guess I can go on just doing it locally with my students. I'll not submit any other song till I am sure it's OK.
Thanks for your advice.

Sure I can help you. Go to Resources- then click on Recent flipcharts and there you'll find a Song called Close to you.(it's a blue flipchart with some pictures on it.
Let me know what you think of it!

In response to Peter's comment I have found a royalty free site in which you can search for music by feel or tempo. These should be useful to add to any flipchart and not worry about copyrite

Hope some of you find this useful

Hi everyone:)

I was talking to a friend of mine (who is a web designer) about copyright and that sort of thing... According to him, it's ok to use a song/video as long as we specify: You must cite your source in the credits.
1- the name of the song
2- artist's name
3- the name of the album
4- the name of the recording company

Bye for now

I, too, share Pete's concerns about using others' music in published flipcharts.

Here is a condensed version of the (Educational) Fair Use Guidelines for copyright:

You may use:
10% or 30 seconds (whichever is smaller) of music and still be within the guidelines. You must cite your source in the credits.

Here is a great site that helps to explain the guidelines. I have used it with my students and in teacher inservice sessions on copyright.

The problem with copyright is particularly acute when copyright material is posted to Planet. As Promethean is a commercial company, it can be argued that we're infringing copyright because we're using the material to promote our products. So while it may be safe to use copyright material in the classroom, putting it on Planet leaves Promethean open to legal action!

[clap]Using music, especially if it is chosen by the students, provides a powerful connection to their reality and interests. I do appreciate the copyright concerns brought up by several replies. We, as teachers, need to practice what we preach about plagiarism, and stay informed about the legal use of materials. The royalty-free web site is an excellent solution.

I have a huge folder of song flips - I haven't submitted any because of the copyright issue.

I feel that for me, I've bought the books and cds and so it's just another way of using it so I reckon that it's ok for me to do this. I have given the songs to one or two people who have asked for them but not widely at all.

I think it's an easy way to teach singing - we have a massive IWB in the hall and the whole school sing their hearts out once a week.

Try looking for music to use for podcasting and other projects from the Open Media Directory (http://www.ourmedia.org/node/156258). My favorite is the Live Music Archive at the Internet Archive. (http://www.archive.org/index.php)

My new favorite site to find copyright and royality free music to use for classroom flipcharts is Freeplay music (http://www.freeplaymusic.com/). Any of the tracks downloaded and used must credit the site: "Music Proided By www.freeplaymusic.com".
