I'm a secondary math teacher who has been using the ACTIVstudio for the first time this year, so everything is a discovery!

When we are talking about word problems and I need to draw a picture so we can "see" the scenario, I draw the demensions on the first flipchart page. When the diagram is completed, I take a picture of the whole page and send it to the next flipchart page. Once I get to the second page, I shrink the diagram and put it into the corner where we can reference the color or portion of the diagram that we are calculating. It works really nice for my ED/BD students who need to see the word problems.

Another thought was recording the constructions. Each time a student needed to see the steps to construct, they could come up and press play.

Also recording a flipchart with animated problems when I'm not going to be in the classroom. Like a substitute teacher!

I have used the Flipchart Recorder to replay the steps in Vector addition and subtraction.
I like your idea of capturing the image and using it on the next page.

The flipchart recorder is great for recording handwriting strokes. So children can repeated see letter formation. I've seen it used to great effect by Chinese teachers. Their characters are complicated!

I like the idea of recording math problems with the recorder and then posting them on the web for parents to see how the kids are taught to solve the problems today. Very likely different than when they were in school!!

When you put the video on your website, how do the parents view it?

If you are on a PC, it simply shows up within the Internet Explorer window with controls to play, stop, pause and go frame by frame.

Give it a try - record something, then go to the menu - flipchart - export - html and say yes if it asks you to view it now. Then you can see for yourself!!

Thats cool, does it work in all internet browsers? Do you have to have active x installed or anything? How about on mac will it play in safari on mac too?

I've only tested it in Firefox and IE on the PC. It doesn't work for me on the Mac yet in Firefox (unless I'm missing some plugin) but I'm hoping it will work in 3.0.

It is cool, isn't it??

Just to clarify.
The early posts in the thread were referring to Flipchart recorder, this records actions in the flipchart only and produces a sequence of pictures that may be replayed within the flipchart environment only.
The later part of the thread refers to video recordings (whole screen or area) that produce video (.avi) files.
There is a windows media player available for mac that is available for download from the www.Apple.com (http://www.Apple.com) website which should allow macs to handle avi's
BTW Apple have also released Safari for PC's

If you would like to see a GREAT example of using the flipchart recorder in a Math Flipchart, check out the resource library for a flipchart titled, "Introduction to Division with Remainders". It was created by Kelly Gilchrist, who is a teacher in St. Louis, Missouri. (It might be easier to find it by doing a "Submissions by State" and looking under Missouri.

Good job Kelly![clap][clap][clap]

Don't know if you've seen these:

The teacher has made a number of different flps, each differentiated according to the ability of the children. The flps are then posted onto the VLE for the students to access.

Sorry for posting an unrelated reply, but I need a bit of help. I have been making training videos for my school and in a previous session used screen recorder. However, I've gone back a couple of months later and cannot, for love nor money, found screen recorder again! I've tried to used the screen recorder from power tools, but it only allowed me to record when a flipchart was open. It also only saved it as a .flr file. My previous work allowed me film the entire desktop and saved as an avi file.

Sorry to sound so basic, but need some guidance please to get me back on track

Thanks in advance

Hello, nobrien. In all the versions of Activstudio I have at the moment, when you click on the video recorder a drop-down box appears with options, one of which should be full screen recorder and another area recorder (Or something to that effect). These should allow you to record outside of Activstudio. The file is then saved as a .avi file on a Windows machine or a .mov file on a Mac. It sounds like what you are trying to use is the flipchart recorder, a useful tool in its own right for recording step- by- step or frame- by- frame. Hopefully this helps!
