I love the ability to embed video's, sounds and office documents within the flipchart. This means that one file keeps the whole lesson together including lesson plans and worksheets. This is a great resource. As with powerpoint, you had to re link any sounds attached seperatley - a real pain for sharing ideas.. The ease with which this is possible in activstudio is great! [clap]

I love to embed pdf's in my flipchart of anything that I want to print out for the students.

Hi Moree1 and Lisa
Can you please expand on this?
As I read it, the lesson plans and worksheets are not there to be shown on the board in the classroom, but are included so sharing this resource means only one file has to be shared rather than the flipchart plus each supporting document?
Cheers

You can do either... depending on the need.
I like to consider the flipchart, as well as being a presentation format , also being a "scaffolding tool" for a lesson - providing structure and organisation for all teh various elements that a comprehensive lesson or topic make use or make reference to.
In addtion to its native presentation and notetaking function - It can not only act as both a launchpad to documents and links when teaching -but also a "store" of all the elements when distributed.
Page notes are a similar concept in that additional context sensitive information such as lesson guidance can be fully embedded into one file and distributed.

Hi
How do you embed word/PDF documents onto the Active primary screen so children can interact with them please?

I'm not sure you ought to embed a whole Word or PDF document in a flipchart if you want children to interact with it. There will probably be too much text to read easily, especially for younger children. I recommend that you highlight a smallish chunk of text in the original document and then copy and paste it into the flipchart page. To paste onto an Activprimary page, you need to be in Design Mode thenright click over the page and choose Paste.

I just learned how to embed videos. I downloaded a flipchart from the resources and it said the slide had an embedded video but when I clicked on it, nothing happened. How can you get the videos to play from a downloaded resource?
Hi Craig,
This means that the author of that flipchart did not embed the video and hence you cannot see it when you click on the action object.
Hi David,
I think the discussion is about the ability to embed pdf and word files ( worksheets) in a flipchart.
The advantage of this is to create a single flp file and be able to share it with others and still have all the resources in one file.
You can embed pdf and word files in a flipchart and have them open with Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Word with clicked on the correct action object.

Hi David,

.
I said what I did because I've come across too many teachers who find this feature and then teach from the text file, but you're right. It is very useful to have everything in one place.
I agree David.
That is why I scratch my head when I hear users wanting to know how to import complete word or pdf document into a flipchart page. I understand that Smart has a feature to do that, but pedagogically it makes no sense.
It does make sense to embed a worksheet in pdf or word format in a flipchart and then open it with its native app and then use desktop or live mode to annotate over it and model for students how to solve problems

Funnily enough Smart's feature was mentioned here yesterday: http://www.prometheanplanet.com/common/html/vb_forum/showthread.php?t=5753

I tested this by embedding a Word doc into a flipchart. At first I thought it didn't work because the file size was only 6KB. But I moved it to a different drive and it opened ok. But the original Word doc has a file size of 20KB. How can this be???
Cheers

When you embed files in ActivStudio, it is zipped/compressed and hence you see the smaller file size.
Rex, here is something you can do that will show that is the case.
Rename the flipchart that has the embedded word document from a .flp extension to a .zip extension. Ignore any warning that you may get when doing it.
Now unzip the zipped file. In the unzipped folder you should now be able to see the original word document that you embedded.

Saha,
I am so glad you made that point. My flipcharts regularly have embedded video clips, and we (teachers) are continually reminded of the limited space on the shared network. It is a great reminder for teachers to utilize in saving space and keeping the lesson, video, and/or any other file into one complete interactive lesson.

Now isn't that cool! You not only have the Word doc embedded but the file size is significantly smaller as well (in my test case 6KB vs 20KB).

1) Choose an item/text that you want to click to play the sound.
2) Double-click on it and your object edit toolbar appears.
3) Click on the icon with the red check.
4) A gray box with the heading Properties and Actions pops up.
5) Scroll down to ACTIONS and click on it.
6) Choose the Open embedded documents or file.
7) Select your sound/song from your file and click ok.
Now your song/sound is embedded.
