View Full Version : Page Panning..... when there are more ideas than space to write them down....

In the settings of AS there is an incredibly useful facility called "Page Panning" that you can switch on...
When this is active a small dotted line appears round the edge of the flipchart. You can grab the outer edges of the flipchart and simply drag to create more space at the sides, top or bottom.
Using this you can brainstorm an idea and keep making line links and add image etc, indefinitely.
Effectively you can make the page and space beyond as large as you need - on the fly.
WOW!!!
Please tell me this is available in AP too.

Hi Dug
I'm guessing it is a similar idea to selecting the page zoom tool in AP and click and dragging your original 'page' off to one side. Although originally the new page background is grey you can fill it with white then you would have an endless page.

P.S. Being a bit  - what does 'on the fly' mean?

Wow, this is cool beans!! [clap] [clap]
One thing I gave up when I started using the ActivBoard was a long traditional whiteboard, with about 3 times the area of the ActivBoard. At times I miss the extra space, especially with Yr 11 and Yr 12 mathematics.
A few nights ago I was planning to create some custom pages that were larger than 1024 x 768 (my display resolution) such as 4096 x 768 so I could add them to the library. If I needed more space to finish a solution to a problem, I could then scroll down the page.
Now there is no need - with page panning I have pages of infinite size (well, almost).
Note: whenI first dragged the flipchart, the newly visible sections were dark grey. I used the paint bucket to fill this area with white - no more grey!
Kudos to the AS3 team for adding this feature! [clap] [clap] [clap]
Cheers

Hi Sarah
'On the fly' means ad hoc or as you go along.

Of course. Thanks, Sarah. I hadn't thought of 'filling' the grey. Top tip.

Thank you - have never heard of that one but suppose it makes sense!

I'm working on a flipchart that "kinda" includes this.
I have written text boxes and grouped them with arrows. Only the arrow appears on the left of the page (lined up one on top of each other and pointing to the right.)
The teacher or student can drag the arrow across the page and the objects (text or images that are grouped) with it will come on the page as you drag the arrow.
Then I can hit the "reset" button (another fav tool) and it will go back and then we can drag the "next" arrow on the page.
It's a great use of space!
I'll attach one of the pages from the flipchart. (It's about looking at the different refrains of a song.) Sorry it's so big but there SHOULD be the song itself embedded. (Click on the treble clef to play it.) Let me know if you cannot hear the song.

You need to be careful here. It sounds like you are page panning into the world space, ie the grey area outside the flipchart page. There is nothing wrong with this per se. It's just that some things won't work, eg printing will not include objects in the world area. Also the Reveal Tool will only cover up the page area and not the world area.

Hi Lisa
This is a really good example of using the space available around the 'seeable' flipchart page. Will have to remember that idea - i'm sure it will come in handy. [clap]
Song played fine for me - only one thing which I'm sure you are aware of, I couldn't read the text that was attached to the arrows as the starry background was too dark.

I know I should try this before posting - but, In "Settings" you may set your "World" colour. What happens if you choose white to match the default flipcart colour?

Theres no need for any workround as you can pan horizontally or vertically as follows;
1. Create custom flipchart
2. Use the slide bars to make the page 3 x 3 (or larger)
3. Click OK.
The flipchart should then be large enough to scroll left/right and up/down. If you have a grid in view you need to go Zoom > Original Scale.
Note this was the subject of a thread by someone from Promethean only a couple of months back.

Don't forget you can change page properties to give different pages sizes with vertical and horizontal scroll options as per attached example.

Wow - I had no idea we could do that. That is extremely helpful and will solve the issues that have come up with some teachers recently. Thanks sooo much for posting that Dan!!

I have done everything you are supposed to: Checked panning in the Flipchart setting and under "New" selected custom and opened the screen as far as it will go both height and width wise (also made sure the frame size was screen size in custom view) and I cannot pull the screen to make it larger. If I use the scroll bars it will move but not much. I did change the panning distance to 20 but it didn't make much difference. Last school year I followed the same procedure and it worked. [clap] Any suggestions?

I am on the Mac side of things and was wondering if Page Panning is available as a setting there as well. I have typically just made my flip charts oversized, which works fine when I remember to do it.

You can change the color of the "world" area so that it will not be grey when you use the zoom tool to move your page around. The setting for the world color can be found in the studio settings under the flipchart category.

I have used page panning a lot. I was wondereing if anyone knows how to make an action button to turn it on and off?

Unfortunately there isn't an action to set for turning page panning off or on.

Hi - I have the dotted line around the edge of my flipchart now, but no movement of the flipchart occurs when I attempt to drag the box. Is there a setting that I have enabled which is blocking this or am I just plain doing it wrong?
Thanks
Phil

You need to use the Page Zoom Tool (the magnifying glass icon) to pan.

The page size needs to be set up to be bigger than the visible area. You can then drag the gap between the dotted line and the edge of the window towards the middle to drag the 'outer' areas into view.
Dragging the zoom tool does similar.
