View Full Version : My top tips

Here are some top tips that I recommend. (I'll put a few in if you don't mind.)

1) Don't create presentations!

Everyone hates to sit through slideshows and lectures- even adults. When considering the role of the student in the lesson, attempt to create multiple opportunities for interaction, response and feedback. You want the students actively participating in the lesson, not just serving as a passive audience to a presentation.

2) Mix up the interaction.

Try to “mix up” the types of interaction as well. Students can interact verbally, come up to the board individually, work from their seats with the Activslate, or participate as a group using Activotes.

3) Keep students on task with Activotes.

A great way to keep students on task it to keep the Activotes out all the time and ask students to agree or disagree with what an individual has contributed to the discussion or lesson.

4) Don't be afraid to “give up the pen.”

Adding pages that allow for student responses gives them an opportunity to share responsibility and ownership of the lesson. Create the activities so that you keep the invididual interaction short enough so each student can have an opportunity. And the others keep paying attention!

5) Don't feel you have to create everything yourself!

Promethean Planet has TONS of lessons to download and try out. Even it you don't like certain pages or the order of the lesson, you can always change it and adapt it for your classroom and style.

Plus there are so many great templates to use! Explore the resource library a little at a time. (The Venn Diagram template with integrated voting is one of my favorites. Then EVERYONE can have an opinion on where to place a particular image or concept in the diagram...keeping more students involved!)

I have been struggling with the templates. There is one that looks like the news wheel from have I got news for you (its a circle with a 1/4 cut out). The idea is to hide pictures or images behind. Every time I try to alter it I get an error message about a previously published flipchart. Help?

Hi Karen,

Can you attach your flipchart with this page included? +wave+

Here goes.

Wont let me:mad:. Same error message. This is part of a published flichart. It is called flipchart builder examples uk.

If I can't unlock it can you point me in the direction of how to do it? I can't work out how to draw a circle with a 1/4 cut out. I am sure it is simple! I have today been playing with adding actions to buttons (such as duplicate and reset) and have been playing connect 4 with my students! I was impressed I don't know if they were[clap]

Thanks

Karen,
Use the full protractor with the pen tool.

Bring the pen near to the protractor edge and a pen will appear as the cursor.

Draw the dimension shape you want.

Voila! Full circle with a quarter taken out (or whatever section you want missing).

Lisa,

I know your original post is almost a year old, but I just read it and would add to your comment about giving up the pen.

I try to be "the sage on the stage" as little as possible. I build flipcharts that can be student run, from info through questions, to votes or reveal for answers post discussion.

As the year progresses students are taught they have the right and the responsibility to call on every student in the class during any session. (I teach middle school history (7th) and math (8th) so my classes rotate). Students are taught public speaking standards of posture, voice etc...

ACTIVstudio has freed me to move about the room and encourage, guide, and assist. I can be more "guide on the side" (an old middle school phrase).

In Algebra, by following the scanned in images from their textbook, my 8th graders guide each other along through their lessons. I'm there to supervise, but I actually feel more a part of the process than the process. Thanks for your comments.
