This applies to ActivStudio V3.

This is not an advertised feature, but it is possible to screen rude words from being displayed using the handwriting recognition tool.

Firstly, Each HR language has its own number and you need to know the one you will use, for the filename of your list of words.
-1.txt UK English
-2.txt French
-3.txt German
-4.txt US English
-5.txt Italian
-6.txt Dutch
-7.txt Portuguese
-8.txt Brazilian Portuguese

Secondly, create a notepad file with a list of all the words you want screened, putting each word on a separate line. Save this in the Application directory (Program Files/ACTIV Software/ActivstudioPE3) using the appropriate file name listed above (eg -1.txt for english)
Reload ActivStudio and now when you use the handwriting recognition tool, any words in that list will be replaced by a number of asterisks in place of the letters.

Hope this proves useful...

Very handy to know. Thanks. Will it work the same in ActivPrimary?

Useful information, Craig, thank you. With the French handwriting recognition tool switched on recently, I was surprised to see my writing transformed into a French verb that I wouldn’t ever use … my HoD was observing … the pupils didn’t know, but I was really embarrassed. I scribbled it out, then binned it.

Perhaps the screening should happen before the software is released.

Hi JanP et al

Yes, screening works in Activprimary... you can specify any word to be screened... a line of asterisks will replace the word.

It's particularly useful so inappropriate words don't accidentally appear when writing words such as can't, twit, shot...(!!!)

There's a page in the help file about this: search for Word Blocking.

Is there a filename to ban Mexican Spanish words too? Or a place that lists any other languages?

Cheers!

Hi rbeforee, welcome , or shoudl that be ¡bienvenido!, to the forum

I'd refer you to the same help file page I mentioned previously- word blocking/bloqueo de palabras. According to he page you can create files for many languages, but, oddly, not for Spanish.

I'll double-check this,
Hope that helps for now,

Simon

Hi again and thanks!

As I suspected, you've found a mistake in the help file.
You CAN screen Spanish rude words (not specifically Mexican Spanish, but as you can pick the words you want to include, you can tailor the Spanish file for any Spanish-language words you want).

To save you going back to the help files, here's the full set of updated instructions:

1. From the Start button on your desktop, find and open the Notepad program.

2. Write your list of words in the Notepad file. It doesn't matter if you use upper or lower case letters. Press Enter after each word to start a new line.

3. Save the file to your main application path: C:\Program Files\Activ Software\ActivstudioPE3.
Give the file one of the following names, including the dash, depending on the language you are using:
-1.txt
UK

-2.txt
French

-3.txt
German

-4.txt
Spanish

-5.txt
US

-6.txt
Italian

-7.txt
Dutch

-8.txt
Eur Portuguese

-9.txt
Braz Portuguese

-10 .txt
Maori

-11.txt
Simplified Chinese

-12.txt
Traditional Chinese

Thanks again!

Simon
