View Full Version : Using the gesture wheel

This might seem obvious but thought I would pass on a good tip for getting to grips with the gesture wheel in V3.

It's important that when you select the tool and hover your pen over the board you notice the small dots (I think there are three) appear. Wait for them to appear and before you start you need to keep your hand perfectly still...and then away you go {}

I think the coolest part to this is when you move from one side of the Activboard to the other, taking the toolbox with you by the flick of your wrist!

I liked this idea for using the Gesture tools, inspired by Dug... use the Gesture tools for a quick way to insert a new page after your current page when you need to give something further explanation in a lesson.

Here's how:
1. Click on the Main Menu button
2. Select Studio Settings. (Activstudio Settings box opens)
3. Click Gesture Wheel.
4. Tick Enable Gestures.
5. Select a Gesture in the Gesture list.
6. Scroll down the Action list and select New Page After Current Page.
7. Click OK and your gesture should be set up...!

Just out of interest, what settings do you use for your gesture wheel? I played with it for a bit one afternoon but couldn't get it to consistently do what I wanted, so I left it.
But the next day when I was writing on the board in class, my pen kept turning into an eraser  .

So I turned it off and haven't had time to go back and play with it again.

Cheers

Hi Rex,

I work for the training dept at Promethean and so never really have a consistent way of working the software. I've haven't, therefore, come up with an ideal set of tools. I'd be interested in other peoples' ideas...

Certainly I am more comfortable with the 10 and 50 gestures.

I think it's important to make gestures work the way you want them to work... especially to avoid launching gestures by accident as you say... it seems like the gesture that launched the eraser wasn't the one for you, but there are plenty of other gesture-types to work with...

I adjusted my settings and found it highly consistent for me with the following with both board and slate.

Tolerance: 10
Size: 25
Speed: 30

The thing I haven't been able to work out about gestures (in AP) yet is how useful they might be for a board which is shared by a variety of users.

A user like myself might get a lot out of them, but along comes another user, with a different pen-style and the gestures cause panic and frustration unless that user goes to the trouble of turning them off or changing them.

Unless the software is individually configurable (is this possible?), then I can't see us making use of them at all.

yes you can create your own personal profile on ver3

Sorry Saha, you can't customise a profile in AP  ! But what you could do is to disable them when they are not being used by others. +wave+

Hi Dennis,

Yes I can see that the ability to personalise the gestures is a mixed blessing in the situation you describe...!

A point worth mentioning. Each computer user logon account can have their own Primary settings. These are held in the 'My Documents' folder for each individual.

If you only have one logon account for all users then each user will have to change the Gesture Wheel setting accordingly each time they run Primary.

I am new to using the gesture wheel and I have went to the menu, studio settings, and gesture wheel however the option to enable it is grayed out. What can I do to make this become hot so I can select it.

Thanks -
Keith

Are you connected to the Activboard now?

No, I am in a training session right now. I was wondering if I had to be connected to an ActivBoard. I am using the software but no board

I THINK you have to be connected. Maybe someone else can chime in.

I am assuming you would need to be connected since you need to do the gestures on the board.

Hi all,

Just to confirm that you do need to have a device such as an Activboard connected for gestures to work

Why when I go to the gesture wheel is everything grayed out?
It won't let me click enable gestures?

Thanks,
Kelly

Are you connected to a board? I'm pretty sure gestures only work when you're connected to a board.

Handwriting recognition and gesture wheel requires the user to be connected to the board.

You may be able to simulate the board and get these features working without being actually connected to the board if you connect the USB 2.4 Ghz wireless hub that is used for Activotes, ActivExpression and the new Activslate.

I have been attempting to make this gesture thing work and it is not working for me. I followed the directions set up at the beginning of this thread, found the setting numbers and changed them, but can't get it to work. I just wanted it to go to the next page.
