Very effective idea that I'm sure many old hands will already have used, but my Y5s loved it...
Flip chart with single word on each page all on same topic - very large and colourful on a contrasting background (not essential but adds variation). Use the reveal blind to gradually show the word and pupils put up hand once they think they know what the word is. Works well using top down or bottom up reveal for focusing on word shapes, rather than individual letters.
