once you have drawn a shape is there no way of adding a shaper border or changing the colour other than deleting it?

You need to choose to add a border before adding it to the page. You will see a star shape to the right of the selection of shapes that appear at the bottom of the page. Click on this before adding your shape to the page.

If you want to change the colour of the shape you can use the "fill tool" - a bucket like icon two thirds of the way down the toolbar.
