View Full Version : Y3 Mental and Oral
I have been asked to do a mental and oral demo for our Y3 lower set - the teacher hasn't started using the board yet, so I need high impact but easily achievable ideas.
I am thinking about doing a "connect 4" style game with the dice, but wondered if anyone could share any other ideas.
I appreciate it's a hectic time of term so quite understand if you don't have the energy currently!

I don't have a direct response....
But I was asked again (!) today could the number arrows be ordered in such a way that they are already "layer" assigned.
Because the number arrows (Numeracy, Number, Number Arrows) are TTH, TH, H, T, and units and there are only three "available" layers this would be quite difficult.
What I came up with seemed to work. tongue.gif
Create several pages within a flipchart where you have dragged your number arrows up in order. Therefore, first TTH, then TH etc etc. Create copious numbers of each arrow in a pile. And then when you drag our your arrows from your assigned piles they will be in the right order.
Obviously the prep. of this may take you a while but once created.... graemlins/cloud9.gif
In fact what would be fantastic is if someone were to do it, use it, tell us about it and then share it graemlins/help.gif

Hi Lara
I have to agree that using the dice is one of my favourite ways of using the board for mental/oral starters - but we have used the follwing idea with our Year 2's, although it may too easy.
Create a flipchart with different pages of different amounts of the same object e.g. a page of footballs or fish etc.(chosen from the resource library) - you can also quickly fill pages with objects duplicating the pictures found under 'counting' within 'numeracy' in tesource library. Once you have created your pages you can then use the reveal tool found within special tools to quickly show the children the objects allowing them to estimate the total number on the screen. You can check their estimates by drawing around groups of objects and counting them, therefore practising counting in 2's, 3's, 5's etc.
Hope this might help. Good luck anyway.

Number arrows. Try this..
- In Settings, ensure "Objects to Front" is checked.
- Go into Design Mode.
- Add all the number arrows you need to a page.
- Marquee select all the arrows.
- Go to Properties and set them all to be containers.
- Now add a grid 1x1 to the page.
- Turn on "Snap to Grid" and "Grid Mask"
- Move all the arrows so that they are snapped to the grid.
Now, whenever you drag a smaller arrow onto a bigger arrow so they align approximately at the right hand edge, the smaller arrow will snap into place exactly and will become contained by the bigger arrow.
The "Objects to front" setting ensures you don't need to be concerned with layers.
Using this you will be able to easily create number arrow combinations.
The reason this works is because the number arrows are in fact objects which have been created using the ACTIVstudio 2 Developer version which (amongst tons of other things) allows you to set the snap point of an object to be "right edge"

Brill! graemlins/clap.gif
I keep forgetting about "objects to front" option.
I spent ages trying to resave the number arrows on different layers, but of course there weren't enough layer options
Easy when you know how!

Great one Nigel!
As Margaret says "Brill!" graemlins/clap.gif
It sounded complicated but in fact it was pretty easy. I can see another flipchart being created in the Summer - isn't that why teachers have holidays??!!
Fantastic - thanks!
So much to learn... will find the time!
