View Full Version : Black instead of yellow

I would be happy with the new named mode features in version 2.5 if it worked consistently. I have found that about half the time I use it the names in the bar at the top of the screen turn BLACK instead of the usual YELLOW once the student votes. I also lose the ability to specify a correct answer. If I allocate the devices to the users and wish to check the allocation, the names appear in the first column. The second column is blank down to the line bellow the last registered user and device A1 starts on the line bellow the last user. I installed 2.5 a week ago so I think I have the latest version. Has anyone else had this problem? Have you found a solution?????
Regarding the black/yellow thing - the colour coding should be - grey (not voted yet), yellow (voted with a choice corresponding to one of the possible answers) and black (voted 'out of range' or not one of the possible answers). The black vote should only occur if the question settings are such that there is a choice of fewer than 6 answers to choose from; for example if the answer is A,B or C and someone votes for D,E or F then they will go black.
If you have settings that allow students to change their mind once they've voted, you can spot the blacks and say something like "Jessica, you need to choose A,B or C" and then watch as it changes to yellow when she revotes. This is also a useful way to teach them to take care when voting and after voting as quite often it identifies inadvertant accidental votes that sometimes occur when the student feels they've voted, relaxes and then fiddles or accidentally hits a button as they wait for the result (more common with younger kids).
You might want to check on the Activote Question settings by right clicking the page (in design mode) to make sure you don't set yourself up for problems like this.
Not sure I can help you with your 'user' problems but good luck.

Sometimes, if you change session settings during a session, after you have already voted, it will turn the responses black. I just close the flipchart and restart to get the yellow back.
I still have a bunch of teachers asking for a different color when a student changes their answer.

The black/yellow thing happens if the settings are Multiple Choice 6. And happens no matter what answer is chosen. I am familiar with the system and the way that is supposed to work. I have used ACTIVote for three years now and have trained others how to use it . This is very strange behavior, in my experience. The Results window that displays when this happens is a dark blue and black. The letters of the choices do not appear in the Results window. If I click the " Who answered What" I get names but not the letter answer.
Is there any situation, of which I am unaware, in which this behavior should happen?

First, make sure that you have 2.5.72.
If I were having those issues, I would repair/reinstall the 2.5 version and if that did not work, call technical support.

Reinstalling 2.5 won't make any difference. This is a known issue & no it definately shouldn't happen.
Restarting the flipchart will stop it happening in that instance & you should get the correct voting results on the next round of voting.

I am having the same problem. I have contacted tech support and they were unable to help me. I am just a frustrated over the situation with the votes turning black. I hope someone out there has a good answer for this problem. I also have been using the activotes for a while and I also know that if a student chooses a response not offered it will turn black, but I am having the problem even if they answer correctly! AND closing and reopening the window is not a solution to my problem. Help is greatly appreciated.

Rebooting the board itself might help.
Find its power suppy and turn it off for a few seconds.

Cheryl and others - I didn't think of this until JUST now - but maybe you need to CLEAR out past voting sessions results. If you are using the same lesson repeatedly and not erasing the old data, maybe this has something to do with what one of the earlier posts had. I really want to see this problem solved. Also - Cheryl had COPIED her flipchart and reused it as template for multiple lessons/flipcharts. PROACTIVE - is this sounding somewhat familiar? I am wondering if copying a flipchart that has previously saved and exported voting results - and then is later copied - I don't know . . . Maybe that has something to do with it and is a quirk in the system. There needs to be some answers for this though - as the Votes really need to work consistently and for problems to be solved when they arrise.
Good luck to Proactive and Cheryl - I will see if I ever encounter this problem and can fix it. Cheryl - I know yours only did this on 2 of your flipcharts - not every single flipchart. It defaults to the black voting (with no results being able to be retrieved) on only those 2 flipcharts. . . Let's get this fixed!!

Last thing - a new idea that I just thought of . . . Go to "start" on your desktop, then "Control Panel" . . . Then click on "Add or Remove Software." You can check your latest versions of software. But also - check to see your latest version of FIRMWARE on you board. I know that some pens of ours at one school were acting goofy because their software was updated, but not their firmware. Maybe if the past version of firmware is still on your board, it may affect how the votes work. I am just trying to help find an answer - not make this more difficult and lengthy. I'd like to hear how this goes.

To check the firmware, right click on the AV icon in your task bar. You must be attached to the board to see this... I know this sounds obvious.. but just thought I would say!+wave+

This is not a firmware problem, it is definitely software and the software team are looking into it. When I have had the problem I found that if I close down Studio then re-open it it's OK, I didn't need to repower the board.

I am still seeing this problem in V3. Has there ever been a solution to this issue?
Thanks,

Hello,
I may be responding to this a bit late ( the joys of no Internet access at home at the mo. . .) but thought it worth clearing up a few things on this thread.
Hi!
As pointed out the black instead of yellow is a problem:( :( :( that is "in hand"[clap] , but there is a temporary quick fix[clap] : go into the Question Settings for that page and just re-click whatever question type it is (ad-hoc/pre-prepared). This seems to reset the page and it 99 times out of 100 it then works. . .
You're absolutely right coming out of the flipchart isn't a pra\ctical option and doesn't always work. Also, to the best of our knowledge it isn't associated with previous voting sessions or the Multiple Choice of 6 choice.
Rest assured we are trying to resolve it but once again latest versions and drivers are good measures as a general rule.
I hope this helps - let us know and I will keep you updated of progress.

Sorry, I've not really followed this thread properly, but I've had an issue with ad-hoc voting going black rather than yellow, and there be no list of letter answers when the results are shown to then "select" the correct one.
I've worked round this by pressing "Summary" which then seems to sort it out. [clap]
I don't know if this helps anyone.
Hi
The black instead of yellow problem is a known one in 2.5 but has been resolved in later versions of the software. However, I did find for a while it reoccurred in the flipcharts that were made in the Build that the problem originally happened in. :(
The temporary work around was to go into the Question Settings for that page and click on question type (you don't actually have to change it, just reclick on it) - this corrected it.[clap]
It is being looked into but the ultimate solution is to update your software version. If anyone continues to experience this in Vesion 3 please contact Tech Support.
I hope this helps in some way.

Hello.
I have only just got ActiVote. I made some ActiVote Flipcharts on my home laptop, saved them onto a USB, then transferred the flips onto my computer in the classroom (that is attached to the board). When the children tried to vote, it went black. No amount of closing down and re-booting helped. I took quite a bit of time over these flips and I would really like them to work! Any ideas?
I have ActivPrimary version 3 on both class computer and laptop - don't know if that's relevant or not.
Also, I tried re-setting the question. It worked. So I saved it, went into it again and it was black again. So although that works as a temporary solution, it is not ideal. I don't want to do that every time I use an ActiVote page!
I agree the temporary work around is not ideal but please bear with us - we are trying to resolve this.
The problem (and I guess the blessing) is that it is an intermittent problem but his makes it more difficult to pinpoint. I had mistakenly thought it had been resolved in V3 but after a discussion today (and your response) I stand corrected.
However, this is no excuse and we are trying to track it. I'd be grateful Geekazoid if you would email me privately regarding exactly what you have encountered as this may help.:)
Many Thanks
