The DfES has announced the launch of an interim website as part of a £15m online programme to promote excellent practice in maths teaching.

The National Centre for Excellence in the Teacher of Mathematics (NCETM) will be formally launched in June 2006. It will be a virtual cetnre with a web portal to support activities, backed by resources at regional and local level.

The interim website outlines the roll-out plan and encourages teachers and other key stakeholders to become involved in the project.

Until the launch, activity will focus on identifying regional pathfinder schools and colleges; identifying and training regional hubs, schools and colleges; and instigating links with business and commerce.

A spokesperson for DfES says "We are confident that the National centre will draw in support from across the mathematics community, and put the country in an excellent position to rise to the challenges of teaching and learning mathematics in the 21st century."
