You must reproduce the material accurately and not use it in a misleading

context.

If you are republishing the material or issuing it to others, you must

acknowledge its source, copyright status and date of publication.

The activities cover:

Year 1: In the picture

In this activity children will sort photographs by age, making decisions

based upon evidence such as dress. Try to have a collection of pictures

from several eras and vary the photos used with each group. You can find

some photos on http://www.mape.org.uk/activities/

Year 2: The Gunpowder plot

In this activity children will make a vertical timeline with details of the

Gunpowder Plot. A text file W38 History Y2X is supplied to support this

work. Teachers could make links between this study unit and History Unit

17, 'What are we remembering on Remembrance Day?' which would follow in a

natural chronological sequence. Children should be encouraged to think

about other events in history that we do not celebrate or remember in

special ways.

Year 3: Information posters

In this activity children will look at a range of wartime information

posters, identifying their message and categorising them. They will insert

the pictures into a document and add an explanation of the poster. Posters

can be found at the following sites:

http://www.snaithprimary.eril.net/propagan.htm

http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/~pv/pv/courses/posters/background.html.

An activity sheet W38 History Y3X is provided to support the activity.

Year 4: Who lived in that house?

In this activity children will identify houses in their area that were

built in Victorian (or earlier) times. They will take digital photographs

of the houses and, using Census data they will investigate the families who

lived there, gradually building up a timeline up to the start of the 20th

century. An activity sheet W38 History Y4X is supplied for this work.

Year 5: All in the name

In this activity children will use a large database on the internet to

search for the locations of common Viking place names

http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/freefun/didyouknow/. They will

analyse the information; determining which modern place names are probably

derived from Viking settlements. Two activity files are supplied to support

this work W38 History Y5X and W38 History Y5X1.

Year 6: 60 years of change

The last sixty years have seen unprecedented rates of change in our

society. In this activity, which will last several sessions, children

research different aspects of life in Britain using a range of sources,

before creating a multimedia presentation of their findings. An activity

sheet is provided W38 History Y6X.

Direct2U Mailing - Week 42 Science

Welcome to the latest Direct2U mailing. We apologise for the late arrival

of the Week 41 activities - we had some problems with our server. The

enclosed lesson plans contain ideas to help you use ICT effectively in

Science. This time the focus is on Sc1 Scientific Enquiry with subject

matter drawn from throughout the programme of study. Although activities

are provided for each year group as usual, the focus on Sc1 means that many

are suitable for a range of ages and abilities beyond the year ascribed.

The writing frame W42 Science X is suitable for use throughout KS2.

We hope that you will find the activities useful and pass them on to

colleagues where appropriate. If you have missed any of the previous week's

mailings, or have had difficulty in accessing any of the attachments, you

The activities cover:

Year 1: Growing Plants

After children have carried out practical work, the teacher uses a computer

model of growing a plant to summarise and review a unit of work on Growing

Plants. Children use a computer-based writing frame W42 Science Y1X to

record the results of an experiment.

Year 2: Recognising fruits by their smell

Children develop an experiment to answer the question, 'Which fruits are

easiest to recognise by their smell?' They use a graphing program to record

their results in a block graph or pictogram. Two on-line sources of such

software are suggested. The activity involves devising and planning an

experiment, collecting, analysing, and interpreting data.

Year 3: Elastic Forces

The children make predictions and investigate the force exerted by a

stretched elastic band. They record their results in a spreadsheet table

and view them as a bar chart to discover whether their predictions were

correct. A spreadsheet file is supplied W42 Science Y3X.

Year 4: Electrical Circuits

Children use a computer simulation program to explore electrical circuits

and then write up their work using a writing frame. The activity uses a

simulation that is freely available on-line at

http://www.crocodile-clips.com

Year 5: Freezing Point

The teacher uses an on-line 'gismo' to help explain what happens to water

when it freezes. The children then use the same gismo to conduct an

experiment into the changes occurring to the freezing point of water when

salt is added. The gismo is available from Explore Learning

http://www.explorelearning.com/ and can be found under Science - Grade 6-8

- Physical Science - Chemistry - Freezing Point of Salt Water. The

spreadsheet supplied W42 Science Y6X could be used to record results and

present them in the form of a bar chart.

Year 6: Reaction times

Children develop an experiment to investigate reaction times using a piece

of software available on-line at http://www.explorelearning.com/ The

reaction time experiment can be found under Science - Grade 6-8 Life

science - Human biology health and behaviour - Sight versus sound reflexes.

They record their results in a spreadsheet and write up their experiments

using an electronic writing frame W42 Science X.

The activities cover:

Year 1: What's in your lunchbox?

This activity is based around children finding out what foods the body

needs to stay healthy. Children will investigate different food groups,

carry out a popularity survey and display the results. The children will

then suggest designs for the contents of a healthy lunchbox that takes into

account their findings. The activity makes use of a website

http://www.bbc.co.uk/northernireland/schools/4_11/uptoyou/healthy/foodfuel.shtml

Lesson plan is available at:

http://forumfiles.ngfl.gov.uk/direct2u/w38_dt_y1_whatsinyourlunchbox.rtf

Year 2: Close-up on Design

Identifying everyday objects from photographs taken very close-up is a

regular feature of magazines, and here children start with a similar

activity but based on a PowerPoint presentation, and then create their own

to test each other. Apart from the fun, the aim is to encourage children to

look more closely at how things are designed and built and question why

they are like this. Two prepared files are supplied W38 D&T Y2X and W38

D&T Y2X1. A framework file is also provided to support children making

their own presentation W38 D&T Y2X2. The files are supplied in zipped

format.

Lesson plans are available at:

http://forumfiles.ngfl.gov.uk/direct2u/w38_dt_y2_closeupondesign.rtf

http://forumfiles.ngfl.gov.uk/direct2u/w38_dt_y2_x3.ppt

Year 3: Building the Strongest Box

In this activity, children are going to use software to design and build a

box to contain a large cupful of dried peas, Rice Crispies, rice or lentils

(for the purpose of this example, we will use dried peas). The aim is to

make the box strong enough so that it does not break open when dropped off

a one-metre high table. It also has to have the capacity to hold all the

peas. Children will also prepare a report on their findings to the rest of

the class.

Lesson plan is available at:

http://forumfiles.ngfl.gov.uk/direct2u/w38_dt_y3_buildingthestrongestbox.rtf

Year 4: Behind the Scenes at the Supermarket

This activity is based on a visit to the local supermarket. The children

will look at how the supermarket uses measuring, sensing and control

devices to help run its daily operations. On their return to the classroom,

children create a poster highlighting a use of ICT that they have seen. A

sample table of information is supplied W38 D&T Y4X.

Lesson plans are available at:

http://forumfiles.ngfl.gov.uk/direct2u/w38_dt_y4_behindthescenesatthesupermarket.rtf

http://forumfiles.ngfl.gov.uk/direct2u/w38_dt_y4_x.rtf

Year 5: Making Movies

Here children devise a storyline and produce a simple animation lasting

around 5 seconds. The results from activities such as this can be very

impressive and pay testimony to the imagination and creativity of the

young.

Lesson plan is available at:

http://forumfiles.ngfl.gov.uk/direct2u/w38_dt_y5_makingmovies.rtf

Year 6: Creating Electronic Big Books

In this activity, children work in small groups to design and create an

'electronic Big Book' for the younger children in the school. They will

take into account the reading age and interests of younger children and the

format of Big Books, and test out their books and modify them if necessary.

A storyboard planning sheet is supplied W36 D&T Y6X.

Lesson plans are available at:

http://forumfiles.ngfl.gov.uk/direct2u/w38_dt_y6_makingbigbooks.rtf

Hi Margaret and anyone else reading this post!

Some of these lessons are worth looking at and definitely passing onto subject coordinators - lots have attached worksheets, files and web links.

I have been collecting/downloading these since Week 1 and we're now on Week 43! (Yes I know very sad  ) If anyone wants to see the whole list of 2005 lessons that were produced follow the link below and you will see a link to 2 lists, one sorted by Year group and the other by subjects. You can also register here to receive future lessons by email.

http://forum.ngfl.gov.uk/direct2u

Hope this may help too! :-/

If anyone is interested in having the complete (or most I think) Year 1 and Year 2 set of lessons let me know by sending a private message and I'll get them sent to you if that's easier (I have them all saved in a folder) - sad again! :D
