Using photography to engage students
February 16th, 2009 Posted in Classroom Ideas, Creativity in the classroom, Free Resources, Inspirational ideas and people, Liam O'Marah, Your StoriesI’ve been lucky enough on a number of occassions to escape the office with my camera and explore some great places for Planet purposes, pictures for resource packs, images for Planet Themes, etc, and I love the opportunity to capture a moment for others to see what I can see! The great thing about getting out with your camera is that it allows you to really express yourself, take pictures of what interests you and use them to convey a thought, an incident or just simply to ponder.
With this in mind I was interested to hear about one teacher’s efforts from Chevening Primary School, in Kent, UK, to engage his students in a cross-curricular exercise that covered RE, Citizenship, Science and Art. Nadeem Qureshi, himself no stranger to Planet since being a Teacher Feature some while ago, created a photography competition that no only saw his pupils taking part, but also running it - everything from organising the exhibition to the press releases!
I think it’s such a great way to get kids involved in learning, using a picture as a starting point to create a story and photography covers a wide range of subjects as well. Pictures are a very personal experience but Nadeem’s competition idea opened up a whole avenue of discussion for other pupils and he even managed to involve other schools, whilst raising money for charity.
So, if you would like to see what Nadeem’s pupils saw, feel free to download a selection of the images, which have been put into resource packs, direct from Planet.
